Delivering renewable energy the Gold Standard way with Tamar Energy

Tamar Energy is a renewable energy business focusing entirely on anaerobic digestion (AD). AD is a process which addresses the issues of energy security and waste management, through the safe, cost-efficient treatment of organic waste to create readily deployable renewable energy.

Tamar Energy was formed in February 2012 with the aim of building about 40 plants, from which it will generate 100MW of electricity – enough to power around 200,000 homes.

Tamar Energy has stated that the company is committed to treating health and safety as its highest priority. The health and safety of staff, customers, and anybody who may be affected by our operations is of the upmost importance to the business. As part of this commitment Tamar Energy commissioned the National Skills Academy Process Industries to identify the process safety operational structures and management systems that it should develop under the following categories:

  • Process Safety Leadership
  • Hazards & Risk Evaluation
  • Risk Management
  • Safety Knowledge Management

HASTAM, an Academy accredited provider and UK Health & Safety Consultancy Practice, was selected to assist with the technical Health & Safety aspects of this project.

Along with the consultancy project Tamar Energy also put ten of its executive team through the Academy’s Process Safety Leadership training course to increase their knowledge of process safety. The course was delivered by Process Industries Consulting, an Academy accredited Delivery Partner.

The course was very well received by the executive team with feedback such as, “helps senior managers realise the issues” and “a huge learning experience for the team”. The trainers too were commended as “engaging and encouraging whilst allowing the team to think of their own organisation and experiences”.

Kevin Thrower, Academy Account Manager from the National Skills Academy said,:

“Tamar Energy has shown great commitment in helping prevent injuries to staff on and off site by attending the Process Safety Leadership training course and the subsequent development of their Process Safety Management system. This along with signing up to the Gold Standard will stand them in good stead for a safe and productive future.”

The consultancy project is now at an end and Tamar Energy is working to implement the recommendations. It has have also signed up to the Gold Standard roll of honour which demonstrates company commitment to skills development in the future.

Tony Wilson, Director of Construction and Operations

“As a new company we wanted to make sure that our approach to process safety, along with the structures and management systems we implement, always meet – and exceed where possible - industry requirements. Using experts in the field provides peace of mind that the decisions we make are based on knowledge and experience. Avoiding accidents is directly related to the commercial strength of the company. This course provided a really good overall analysis of process safety and ensured it is central to every Executive’s remit.”
